Gota patti
Metallic ribbon folded and stitched into shapes on fabric.
गोटा पट्टी
What it is
Gota is a narrow ribbon woven with metallic thread. Patti means strip. In gota patti, the ribbon is cut, folded and stitched onto fabric as an appliqué, forming flowers, leaves and borders.
The work is lighter than zardozi. It gives a bright, flat shimmer and moves easily with the cloth, which is why it suits dupattas and festive wear.
How it is made
- 1CutThe gota ribbon is cut into short lengths for each part of the motif.
- 2FoldEach length is folded into a petal, leaf or diamond and pressed so the edges sit crisp.
- 3PositionThe folded pieces are arranged on the cloth following the drawn design.
- 4StitchThe edges are secured with tiny hemming stitches so the thread does not show on the face.
- 5EdgeA border of narrow gota or lace is added to frame the work.
The tradition
Gota work is closely associated with Rajasthan, where it has long been worn at weddings and festivals. Jaipur is a well-known centre. The craft grew from the region's tradition of metallic ribbon and lace.

How to recognise quality
- Edges lie flat with no lifting corners.
- Folds are even across repeating motifs.
- Stitches are almost invisible from the front.
- The ribbon keeps its shine and does not feel stiff or papery.
Care
- Dry clean only.
- Do not iron directly on the gota. Press from the reverse through a cloth.
- Store with tissue between folds.
