What it is
Mirror work, known as shisha, sets small round or shaped mirrors into cloth. A framework of thread stitches holds each mirror in place, and decorative stitching around it forms a border.
Each mirror throws light back as the wearer moves, which gives the garment a living shimmer.
How it is made
- 1PlaceThe mirror is held flat on the cloth.
- 2AnchorCrossing threads are stitched over the mirror to trap it, in a pattern like a woven cage.
- 3BindThe anchor threads are tightened so the mirror cannot shift.
- 4FrameA buttonhole or herringbone stitch circles the mirror and covers the anchor threads.
- 5SurroundSurrounding motifs are embroidered to complete the design.
The tradition
Mirror work is strongly associated with Gujarat and Rajasthan, especially the Kutch region, where it decorates clothing, hangings and bags.

How to recognise quality
- Each mirror is firmly held with no wobble.
- The framing stitch is tight and even.
- Mirrors are clean, without clouding or chips.
- Spacing between mirrors looks planned, not crowded.
Care
- Dry clean only.
- Do not press directly over the mirrors.
- Wrap in tissue to prevent scratches when stored.
