Resham embroidery

Silk-thread embroidery in rich colour.

रेशम कढ़ाई

What it is

Resham means silk thread. Resham embroidery uses it to fill cloth with colour. Satin stitch gives smooth, glossy fields. Stem and chain stitches draw stems and veins.

Because silk takes dye well, the palette can be wide: flowers, birds and vines in tones that sit softly beside metal thread.

How it is made

  1. 1Choose the coloursThread is selected and matched to the design in graded shades.
  2. 2TransferThe outline is traced onto the cloth.
  3. 3OutlineEdges are worked in stem or back stitch.
  4. 4FillSatin stitch lies side by side so the thread catches light in one direction.
  5. 5ShadeColours are blended by interlocking stitches from one shade to the next.

The tradition

Silk-thread embroidery appears across Indian textile traditions. It is practised in many regions and styles, and is often combined with metal thread.

How to recognise quality

  • Satin fills are smooth with no loose loops.
  • Colour transitions look gradual.
  • Thread direction is consistent within each shape.
  • The back is tidy with short, secured ends.

Care

  • Dry clean recommended.
  • Test for colour fastness before any wet wash.
  • Store out of sunlight to protect the dye.
